The “Check the Facts” Skill and Psychedelic Integration: Grounding the Ineffable

If you have ever participated in a psychedelic journey—whether with psilocybin, ketamine, or ayahuasca—you know that the insights received can feel more “real” than reality itself. In the middle of a journey, you might feel a profound sense that “I need to move to the mountains,” “I must leave my marriage,” or “I am meant to be a healer.” These moments of “Spiritual Emergence” are beautiful and often contain seeds of vital truth. However, at Bring Joy Home, we see a common pitfall: the Spiritual Bypass. This happens when we take a symbolic or emotional “download” from a journey and apply it literally to our lives without filtering it through our “Wise Mind.”To ensure your big breakthroughs don’t lead to impulsive mistakes, we use one of the most powerful tools in the DBT (Dialectical Behavior Therapy) toolkit: Checking the Facts.

The Post-Journey “Glow” and Its Risks

Following a psychedelic experience, your brain is in a state of high neuroplasticity. Your “Default Mode Network” (the ego) is quiet, and your emotions are wide open. This is a “hyper-plastic” window where everything feels significant.

While this state is great for healing, it is a risky time for major life decisions. We often have “Intense Emotions” that lead to “Action Urges.”

  • The Insight: “I felt a deep connection to nature and realized my office job is a cage.”
  • The Action Urge: “I should quit my job tomorrow and buy a farm.”

This is where the DBT skill Check the Facts becomes your best friend.

How to “Check the Facts” on a Spiritual Insight

In DBT, we learn that thoughts and emotions are not facts. Just because you feel a certain way doesn’t mean the situation is that way. Here is how we apply this to integration:

Step 1: What is the Emotion and the Insight?

Identify the feeling. Are you feeling a sense of “Expansion”? “Urgency”? “Enlightenment”?

  • Fact: You had a subjective experience where you felt restricted by your current lifestyle.

Step 2: What is the Event?

Describe the situation without judgment.

  • Fact: You work 40 hours a week in an office. You have a mortgage and two kids.

Step 3: Are you misinterpreting the “Symbol” as “Literal”?

This is the most important step in integration. Psychedelics speak the language of the subconscious—which is the language of symbols, metaphors, and archetypes.

  • The Symbolic Fact: Your soul is craving more freedom and connection to the earth.
  • The Literal Interpretation: “I must quit my job today.”
  • The Check: Is it a fact that quitting your job today is the only way to find freedom? Is it a fact that you have the resources to buy a farm right now?

The Somatic Integration of “Wise Mind”

“Wise Mind” is the place where your “Reasonable Mind” (logic, bills, responsibilities) and your “Emotional Mind” (the psychedelic breakthrough, the passion, the heart) overlap.

At Bring Joy Home, we use Somatic Inquiry to test these insights. We might ask you to visualize staying at your job but spending every weekend in the woods. How does your body react? Does it feel like a “settling” or a “collapse”? Then we visualize quitting the job. Does your heart race with “excitement” or “panic”?

By checking the somatic facts—the way your nervous system responds to the idea—we can distinguish between a “Spiritual Calling” and a “Manic Impulse.”

Titration: Turning “Mountains” into “Molehills”

In somatic therapy, we use Titration—breaking a big thing into small, manageable pieces. If your “fact” is that you are unhappy in your career, you don’t have to blow up your life to honor that truth.

  • Small Step: Can you add more plants to your office?
  • Medium Step: Can you start a weekend gardening course?
  • Long-term Goal: Can you transition your career over the next 18 months?

This is called Effective Action. It honors the spiritual insight without traumatizing your nervous system (or your bank account) with sudden, radical change.

The Goal: Grounded Transformation

“Bringing joy home” means taking the “high-altitude” wisdom of the medicine and walking it down the mountain so it can live in your kitchen, your car, and your relationships. We want your insights to be sustainable. We want them to result in a life that feels good to live, not just a life that looks good in a journal entry.

Did you just have a massive breakthrough and aren’t sure what to do next?

Don’t let your big “Aha!” moments fade away or turn into impulsive choices you’ll regret. At Bring Joy Home, our therapists are experts in the delicate art of Psychedelic Integration. We help you use DBT and Somatic tools to “Check the Facts” and turn your spiritual insights into a grounded, joyful reality.
